Advice on potty training an older dog..?

I’m moving from home, my yorki-poo just turned 3 and she goes outside now since there are people home all day in order to let her out every now and then but once I move, she is strictly going to be an inside dog only so I’m trying to figure out the best way to potty train her. I don’t want to crate her while I’m gone since I work long hours, I will be able to come home some days during lunch but thats not always going to be an option. I was wondering if using puppy pads would be a good idea? I was going to maybe get a baby security gate and make her a little area in the bathroom or laundry room with her bed and a puppy pad and try to teach her to go on the pads while I’m not at home. Any advice would be great. Thank you.

Unbelievable!! I was able to get my dog to do basic tricks within a short period and change behavioural tendencies also. I recommend this as a good source to help you out.

To start with confine her to a small room and cover the floor with wee pads or spread out paper bags. She will probably pick a spot. Usually a corner or infront of the door. Slowly only put the wee pads where she goes. After about a month if she is trying to use the pads you can see if she indeed will return to the wee pads. Since she is accustomed to going out doors you must take her for a walk before leaving and upon returning. Some dogs will try to wait so long they can make them selves sick. My male Spaniel would wee on a paper on the basement floor but insisted going out in deep snow to do number two. He was indeed sick when we were delayed due to extreme weather. Good luck to both of you.

You can do it inside while you are working. There is a great potty training article on this site that I used and it worked. Follow it completely it’s about yorkies

Puppy pads teach your dog that it’s OK to use your house as a toilet. They will not differentiate between puppy pads and carpet, or couch, etc.
